The innovative time management game is scheduled for a September release.
Merscom announced today at the Casual Connect show in Seattle that
it has partnered with GameInvest to publish Sarah's Emergency Room, a
next-generation time management game, for digital distribution on the
online console networks and PC platform. Merscom's production team,
which worked on the hit title Dairy Dash, will work closely with
GameInvest on the marketing and distribution strategy to ensure Sarah's
Emergency Room is embraced by casual gamers. Sarah's Emergency Room
will be available this September.
"Our past successes with time management games will allow us to
help GameInvest make this title exactly what the market is looking
for," explained Lloyd Melnick, Chief Customer Officer at Merscom,
"Sarah's Emergency Room has the chance to redefine the entire time
management genre."
Sarah's Emergency Room casts players as Sarah, a young nurse
who has recently graduated from college and is struggling to start her
career. Her dream is to manage an emergency room in a big city
hospital. In a twist of fate, Sarah is hired for a nursing position at
a small town hospital in Maryville, Arkansas where she discovers that
managing an emergency room is a bit harder than she expected. Sarah is
the central element in the game, tending to all patients who walk
through the door. She brings prescriptions to the different triage
centers, takes X-rays, diagnoses patients, administers treatments and
even assists in the operating room. Play through the game's narrative
to the exciting conclusion -- will Sarah's career as a nurse be a
success?
Key Features include:
- Fun and fast-paced next-gen time management
- 7 hospitals, 9 levels of difficulty per hospital
- Multiple on-screen levels – manage different floors in bigger hospitals by taking patients up and down the elevators
- 3D graphics

A first party title that will probably stay in Japan
By John Tanaka
Great news, Nintendo fans! Nintendo has released its latest WiiWare
game over in Japan. The bad news is revealed by the title: Tsuushin
Taikyoku Hayazashi Shogi Sandan. Hidden within all the moon talk is one
of those dreaded words from the Japanese game market: shogi. That's
right, Nintendo's latest WiiWare title is the download service's latest
shogi game.
Hayazashi Shogi Sandan boasts online play via Wi-Fi Connect as
well as offline play for two players and versus the CPU. Those who do
chose to go against the Wii hardware will find advanced AI routines
through the TACOS AI system that was developed at the Japan Advanced
Institute of Science and Technology.
Solo players have a couple of exclusive modes as well. The game
includes a shogi course for beginners, teaching everything players need
to know about the chess killah. Also included is a tsumeshogi mode,
where players can test their skills at over 200 problems. This mode
offers problems for both beginners and advanced players.
This latest Nintendo branded WiiWare title is available as of
today for Japanese Wii owners. Nintendo is asking its usual 1000
WiiPoints. The title will likely stay in Japan, so shogi fans should
dig out that import Wii system.
For a closer look at the game ahead of purchase, check out the official site Nintendo opened up today.

Mystery title arrives on July 31 overseas.
By John Tanaka
Following a mysterious teaser unveiling a couple of weeks back, Sony
Japan has at long last shared specifics on its newest PlayStation 3
title, The Last Guy, or as it's fully known in Japan, The Last Guy
Japan Premium.
In The Last Guy Japan Premium, you play as Last Guy, who's come
from the Himalayas to save the people of Asakusa, one of Tokyo's hot
tourist spots, from attacking zombies. Your job is simple: find people
remaining in the Asakusa area and lead them to special escape zones.
As suggested in the original teaser trailer from two weeks
back, the game makes use of real life aerial photos of the Asakusa
area. Judging by the few screenshots Sony handed out today and the new trailer video that was posted at the game's official site, gameplay appears to be viewed from a strictly overhead perspective.
The Last Guy Japan Premium hits the Japanese PlayStation Store
on July 31 at 500 yen. The download will take up 314 megabytes on your
hard disk.
Other installments for the game appear to be on the way. The
trailer footage at the official site hints at zombie infestations in
other areas of the world, including The Opera House in Sydney.

The latest Wii Channel.
By John Tanaka
Nintendo added a new Channel to the Japanese Wii interface today.
Joining the growing lineup of non-game tools for the system is the Wii
Digital Camera Print Channel, a channel that lets users print pictures
and more.
With the new channel installed, Wii owners will be able to
select digital pictures to be printed and delivered at a cost of 30 yen
per print. The channel also assists in creating a Wii Photo Book, a
special photo album that's available in multiple sizes, with costs
ranging from 1,575 yen to 2,480 yen.
Even more closely related to the Wii is the channel's Wii
Business Card service. Users select one of six templates featuring
Nintendo characters, add either a real life photograph or a Mii, and
finalize their cards with the requisite details, like address, phone
number, or even Wii friend code. Printing costs run 500 yen for a set
of 30 cards.
Fuji Film is working with Nintendo for this physical part of
this channel. On top of the costs listed above, users will have to pay
shipping fees at rates of 500 yen for express and 200 yen for standard
mail.
As with the other Wii Channels, Nintendo has global plans for
the new channel. Wii owners in North America and European markets can
look forward to similar print services in the near future.

The 'King of Cubicles' position includes annual salary, serious job perks and absolutely no responsibility.
The Game Factory, an international publisher of video games, is looking to hire a time-wasting slacker who will do nothing but play video games and solve a Rubik's Cube on company time. The search to fill the "King of Cubicles" position starts today, to celebrate the launch of The Game Factory's Rubik's World game for Nintendo Wii and DS this fall.
Wasting time is the sole on-the-job responsibility of the "King of Cubicles," and The Game Factory is offering the following compensation package for the qualified applicant:
- An annual salary of $7,326 (based on a national survey of slacker salaries)
- The Game Factory branded electric car (because this person is obviously smart enough to protect the environment)
- Snazzy business cards (because this person will need to hand out a phone number when ladies ask about his cool ride)
- Nintendo Wii console (so this person can get their "game on" on the job)
- The Game Factory Rubik's World video game for the Nintendo Wii and DS systems
"The new King of Cubicles needs to be a person of substance, a real out-of-the-box thinker, and someone who can waste time like a pro. I don't mean waste a few hours. Anyone can do that. The King of Cubicles must have the ability to waste weeks – months even," said Stainslaw Callahan, the current King of Cubicles who will be interviewing his replacement candidates. "Whoever replaces me will have big shoes to fill, but I'm confident the right candidate will come along."
This is a one-year contract position at The Game Factory, where the new hire will "work" from home. Since this job comes with absolutely no responsibility, the new King of Cubicles will be paid monthly and receive job perks, all in exchange for going on with life as usual. This person can continue to go to school, or work, or do absolutely nothing with their lives, and they will still receive all of the benefits of being the King of Cubicles.
Interested applicants can apply at www.kingofcubicles.com and should be prepared to participate in an interactive online interview with Callahan. Applicants who make it through the tough interview questions will be invited to submit a video resume. The best videos will be voted on by the public, which will help The Game Factory decide who will be the next "King of Cubicles." Applicants must be over 18 years old and the winning applicant will be announced Jan. 1, 2009.
Rubik's World
Rubik's World will be offered for Nintendo Wii and DS and is based on the classic "Rubik's Cube" puzzle of the 80's. The game is a collection of extremely addictive, easy-to-play puzzle games, increasing in difficulty as players delve deeper into this 3D world. Each version of Rubik's World will host its own unique and original series of games, where players test their brainpower by constructing 3D shapes and objects, navigating through mazes and even creating their own soundtracks. The DS version allows players to connect to a community of Rubik's World enthusiasts through the platform's wireless connection, while the Wii version accommodates up to four players and features an online message board.

About the Iconic Rubik's Cube
In 1980, the Rubik's Cube, was launched on an unsuspecting world with a Hollywood party hosted by the "other" famous Hungarian Zsa Zsa Gabor, little did anyone know it would become the world's biggest-selling puzzle. Today it looks the same, it works the same and it's still incredibly popular. So iconic did the puzzle become that it earned a place in New York's Museum of Modern Art, and its own entry in the Oxford English Dictionary, not to mention worldwide sales exceeding 300 million copies. Rubik's Cube has been featured in major movies, ad campaigns, generated huge sales of T-shirts and apparel, been used as an iconic image for lottery games and scratch cards and along with the brand's other 3D twisting puzzles, still generates a huge amount of public interest, recognition and affection.

Game developers will convene at the industry's most progressive forum on game audio.
Think Services Game Group, organizers of the Austin Game Developers Conference, announced its first keynote, industry veteran Jason Page who will deliver a speech titled "Is That It? Next Gen Audio." Page, audio manager at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's Research & Development division, has worked on notable titles including Cool Boarders 2 and Gran Turismo, and has been instrumental in the development of the PlayStation 3 audio SDK libraries adopted by developers worldwide. Austin GDC will take place Sept. 15-17 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas.
Staying true to the theme of Austin GDC's audio track, "Breaking out of the Loop," Page will uncover how an informed perspective can help all game developers realize the integral role of game audio, and how audio specialists can look beyond the constraints of their tired methods of development to produce the next cutting edge tracks and sound effects for games. In a year when "next generation" platforms have increasingly asserted themselves as mainstream, Page's keynote will delve into the potential of these newer platforms and discuss what developers can expect from them. He will also discuss what can be learned from the methods and tools of the pro audio market adapted for game developers.
"We are very excited to welcome Jason Page to this year's Austin GDC," said conference director, Izora de Lillard. "The audio track's theme 'Breaking Out of the Loop' resonates with this year's overall message of bringing forth progressive and out-of-the box ideas to allow our attendees to level up their skills and 'Evolve to Win' in the industry."
Joining Page at the conference will be a number of featured speakers also breaking the loop in terms of technique, tools, and thoughts on the future of game audio. Such speakers include Austin Wintory, composer of fl0w, Kurt Larson Audio Director of Slipgate Ironworks speaking on "A Generative, Adaptive Music System for MMO Games," and Chris Grigg head of Standards, MMA/Beatnik discussing three brand new non-proprietary audio standards for audio technology: 3D MIDI Controllers, the High Definition (HD) Protocol for MIDI, and Interactive XMF (iXMF).
In addition to game audio, the Austin GDC features tracks on writing and online games covering business & marketing, design, social networking & community, as well as technology and services. The conference will house over 100 sessions and lectures, a nearly sold-out expo floor; as well as play host to the Worlds in Motion Summit, an Independent Games Festival Showcase, and the Game Career Seminar. Bethesda's RPG is denied classification rating in the land down under, which will ban the sale of the game in the country.
By Jimmy Thang
Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification has refused to give Fallout 3 an age rating. This will prevent the sale and distibution of Bethesda's highly-anticipated post-apocalyptic RPG in the country.
The organization's website listed the game's classification as RC (refused classification) on July 4, and while no particular reasons were given for the refused classification, Fallout 3 does contain drug use and violence. It is also worth mentioning that Australia is known for its strict rating system, especially when it comes to videogames. While movies can receive 18+ age ratings, videogames are capped off at 15+. Games like Manhunt, Reservoir Dogs, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and others were refused classification in their original states but game companies are allowed to censor its products for reclassification. Developer Digital Extreme recently censored and resubmitted its Dark Sector game, which was approved with a 15+ classification earlier this week.
No word, yet on how Bethesda will react. Hopefully we'll find out more when we get our hands on with the game at this years upcoming E3, which kicks off on July 15.

In 1991, Sid Meier put computer gaming on the map when he delivered Civilization to the PC gaming world, launching the "God Game" genre and creating one of the most award-winning and addictive strategy series of all time. Built specifically for console and handheld systems, Civilization Revolution features the franchise's fastest pick-up-and-play action to date and still honors the most beloved elements from the core series: strategic global reign and encounters with history's most intrepid leaders. An intuitive tutorial has been designed to ease newcomers into the world of Civilization Revolution while varying difficulty levels are included that provide challenges to players of all skill levels. Civilization Revolution also takes advantage of the console architecture, providing a graphically and acoustically advanced experience that immerses players in the world of Civilization. Civilization Revolution for Nintendo DS delivers an experience that shares the same game core and features as its console counterparts
In the new streamlined and intuitive multiplayer component, players can log on to the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live online entertainment network or Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and challenge other fans worldwide to determine the greatest ruler. PlayStation Network and Xbox Live users will also be able to download multiplayer maps and scenarios, and all three platforms support the Game of the Week online feature which provides new challenges every week after launch.
2K Games and Firaxis are proud to expand the Civilization tradition with Civilization Revolution which is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and older by the ESRB and is now available for the PlayStation 3 system, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS.

The Chinese race's Blader class is an alternative suited to those players who prefer to equip a sword and shield
Silkroad Online is Joymax' massively multiplayer release based on a fantasy version of the historical trade route between China and Europe. Players can switch among three diverse roles; merchants brave the lengthy journey in search of profit, while thieves pose danger to them along the way, and hunters strive to protect the unwary. The action takes place in locations derived from the real world and the legends of the various regions, and the play involves questing as well as fending off a broad range of formidable monsters. The business model is free to download and play, with optional item sales.
Six exclusive 1280x960 screenshots
Chinese Showcase II: Blader
The Chinese race in Silkroad Online has five weapon styles to choose from, with the Blader being the toughest fighter in the bunch. Sharing skills with fellow swordsmen in the Bicheon class, those who choose this path combine wielding a large, single-edged weapon with the use of a shield to negate damage taken in battle. They are tough foes to kill, even more so since they possess high HP, knockdown skills, and their people's inherent mastery of potion usage.
- This Chinese character wields a massive, single-edged sword and uses a shield.
- A very useful Blader skills is the ability to knock down enemies, so they're unable to do damage.
- They also have special attacks that take advantage of grounded enemies.
- A strong uppercut blow from a Blader not only hurts, it can also knock the enemy off its feet.
- Preparing a huge overhand swing, this Blader uses one of the class' many combo attacks.
- This Blader employs a powerful slash, yet another attack that can send the enemy to the ground.

Plus sales data and comments from Microsoft AU.
By Narayan Pattison
Microsoft announced today that it has lowered the price of its Xbox 360 to $349 AUD. We spoke to Microsoft's Xbox Group Product Marketing Manager, Jeremy Hinton, to get details on the price cut and how Xbox 360 is performing in the market.
First up, let's look at the new pricing. The Xbox 360 Arcade console (256MB memory unit and five Xbox Live Arcade games but no harddrive) is now retailing for $349 (previously $399). The Xbox 360 Pro (20GB harddrive and headset) is now $499 (previously $579). The Xbox 360 Elite (120GB harddrive, headset and HDMI cable) is now $649 (previously $729).
These are some aggressive prices and now mean that the Xbox 360 Arcade is the cheapest next-gen console on the market (ahead of the $399 Wii) and all three versions of the 360 are cheaper than the $699 PS3.
Taking a look at the latest console hardware figures, Wii is the current market leader with 456,000 units sold in Australia and New Zealand. Xbox 360 is slightly behind with 410,000 units and PS3 trails significantly at 285,000 units. Obviously 360 sales will enjoy a boost following this price cut but we'll need to wait and see if it'll be enough to push it ahead of Nintendo's Wii.
Our New Zealand readers will no doubt be pleased to hear there are also lots of dramatic price cuts in their territory too. The Arcade will be priced at $399 NZD, the Pro will now go for $549 NZD and the Elite will come in at $699 NZD.
Microsoft's decision to provide multiple versions of the console has been a mixed bag to date. The original base unit, the Xbox 360 Core console, was an absolute failure. According to Jeremy Hinton, "the Core wasn't the right product. We listened to what consumers said about it; why they weren't purchasing it. There was no question that it didn't do well for us."
In response to consumer requests for storage and a wireless controller, Microsoft created the Arcade unit; which has enjoyed much more success. In the past few months it's been neck and neck with the popular Xbox 360 Pro unit and following the price cut Microsoft expects the Arcade will be its highest selling Xbox.
When quizzed on whether this price cut to $349 was made in order to price it cheaper than the Wii, Jeremy explained it's a decision that's been in the works for a while. "We've had a good history of, where possible, passing on the savings we've made to consumers. So because of recent exchange rate fluctuations and savings in the cost of goods, we're able to pass this on and July's a good time to do that."
With rumours of an imminent price cut in the US also, we asked if Jeremy could provide any insight into it. "Today we're only announcing Australia and New Zealand and what you will see is that certainly over the next 12 months that price drops and price activity will not happen globally. We've been given more authority to do what's best for the Australian consumer."
With the demise of HD DVD, we asked Jeremy where he saw the future of HD movies going. "I see the future as downloadable content. We've seen the success of the downloadable HD movies and TV in Europe and America and we expect to have an announcement in the not too distant future about the service here."
Given that Microsoft made the poor decision to back HD DVD, and it's remained cagey about any plans to release a Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360, these comments are what we expected from Microsoft, but we were encouraged by Jeremy's comment that the last data he saw indicated Xbox Live is currently the #1 HD download service in the USA.
Once thing's clear: this will be the year that the next generation will go mainstream. With Microsoft's new price cuts, plus the recent releases of Grand Theft Auto IV, Smash Bros. Brawl and Metal Gear Solid 4, and the certainty that Nintendo and Sony will respond with price cuts of their own at some point before November, we're confident at least one of the consoles will crack a million units during this Christmas season.

Dungeon secrets revealed.
Yuki Yokoyama, Producer of Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon, discusses the latest entry in the series.
1. Dungeon crawlers are known to have a very core audience, but the art-style of Chocobo's Dungeon is very inviting to casual players. Were you aiming to invite casual gamers in to the dungeon crawler genre, or would newcomers find the gameplay too daunting?
First, regarding the difficulty level, we've adjusted the game's balance so that users who have never played a dungeon crawler can enjoy it as well.
Dungeon crawlers have a reputation for being a core gamer's game in Japan as well, but since the hero of this title is Chocobo, we wanted to make sure we would be able to reach as many, and as wide a range of audiences as possible. By utilizing the fun elements of a dungeon crawler to our advantage, we were able to balance the game so that newcomers can jump right in.
For example, character leveling is continuous, and you won't lose equipped items. We had a very hard time deciding whether or not the leveling should be continuous, but upon hearing that level re-setting is an unpopular feature in the U.S. we became convinced to make our final decision.
2. The last Chocobo's Dungeon was released back in 1999. Why did you feel it was time for the franchise to return?
In Japan, we released a DS title called Chocoboto Mahouno Ehon (FINAL FANTASY FABLES: Chocobo Tales in the U.S.), and fortunately it was received very well by our users. So I wanted to move on to the dungeon crawler, which is after all Chocobo's specialty, and thus commenced development of FINAL FANTASY FABLES: Chocobo's Dungeon.
3. What do you think of other dungeon crawler titles that are currently on the market by developers like Chunsoft? What differentiates Chocobo's Dungeon from these titles?
To put it simply, I think that Chunsoft-developed titles are way more difficult (laughs).
At times you find yourself cursing the game balance for being so ridiculously difficult, but that's part of the fun. For this particular title, however, because it was developed for the Wii hardware, and also because Chocobo is the main character, we consciously kept the difficulty level within an accessible range. We also wanted to utilize the casual art style as a way for users to be able to relate to, and get right into the story.
4. The citizens of Lostime are suppressing their painful memories. Is this social commentary on the prevalence of anti-depressants in modern society?
The people of today are constantly battling a variety of complications. On the surface, it may seem like forgetting all of these complications, as the people of Lostime do, is the key to happiness. Or is it? Running away is never the solution to a problem.
The outcome gained from putting your all into a difficult situation is so much more wonderful than simply forgetting all the pain. This is one of the messages that we try to convey with this game.
5. We have noticed that the soundtracks are musical remixes from various FINAL FANTASY titles. Why did you choose this type of music? Are there any new tracks that have been added to the classic lineup?
The reason why we decided to include classic FINAL FANTASY music in the soundtrack for FINAL FANTASY FABLES: Chocobo's Dungeon, is because we had done the same for the FINAL FANTASY FABLES: Chocobo Tales soundtrack and it was very well received by fans. We consulted composer Nobuo Uematsu as we did for Chocobo Tales, and he happily agreed to supervise, which is how this soundtrack came to be.
Of course, there is brand-new music that was composed for this soundtrack as well. For example, the song Door Crawl that plays along with the opening movie was composed by Ai Kawashima, based on the aforementioned concepts inherent to the storyline.
I'm very fond of her clear, almost translucent voice and the lyrics that were written based on the concept of the story, so the song has been used as-is for the North American version.
6. Do you have any future plans for other Chocobo-themed games?
We would like to introduce what we have in the works as soon as possible, so please look forward to updates!

Balance Board compatibility? Of course!
By John Tanaka
If you played some of the Wii Fit mini games, you just had to know this was coming. A listing for a new title called Hula Wii: Minna de Hula wo Odorou ("Dance Hula Together") recently appeared in a Japanese online retailer's database. Yes, it's a hula-themed dance game, and yes it's compatible with the Wii Balance Board.
Actually, not just compatible. The retailer lists the title as requiring the peripheral. This shouldn't be that big a problem, though, considering that over two million people have Wii Fit in Japan.
The retailer does not provide any details on the game, which hasn't been formally announced by its publisher, Milestone. A Japanese release is set for September 25.

Guitars, prepare to be smashed.
By Ryan Geddes
Rock Band will get an infusion of classic rock 'n roll this month when a 12-song collection of tracks by The Who makes its way onto Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.
The tracks, including three live recordings from the band's Live at Leeds album, were chosen by MTV Games and Harmonix in consultation with Who members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. Here's the full list of songs:
"Amazing Journey"
"Baba O'Riley"
"Behind Blue Eyes"
"Eminence Front"
"Going Mobile"
"Leaving Here"
"My Generation" (Live at Leeds – Rock Band edit)
"Real Good Looking Boy"
"Sea & Sand"
"Summertime Blues" (Live at Leeds)
"Who Are You"
"Young Man Blues" (Live at Leeds)
"We're really pleased to have our songs featured in Rock Band," said Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who. "It allows our established fan base to interact with our music in a way that's fresh and exciting, while also exposing our songs to new audiences."
In June 2007, MTV and Harmonix announced that The Who's Who's Next would be the first downloadable album for Rock Band. Instead, Judas Priest's Screaming For Vengeance took that slot in April. We're not sure if MTV and Harmonix still plan to release a full Who album, but it probably won't be Who's Next, as three of the songs announced today – Baba O'Riley, Behind Blue Eyes and Going Mobile – are on that record.
All tracks will be available for $1.99 (160 MS pts.), or the whole album can be purchased for $19.99 (1,600 MS pts.)
