IN ONE of his short stories, “The Quantity Theory of Insanity”, Will Self suggests that there is a fixed amount of craziness in the world. If one person becomes a bit saner, another will become that bit madder; if one group starts to act normally, another will start freaking out.

But the most dramatic example of the quantity theory at the moment is anger. Many people hoped that Barack Obama would usher in an era of good feeling after the foam-flecked Bush years. He talked endlessly about bipartisanship and national unity. He was also a living symbol of racial reconciliation. America greeted his inauguration with a frenzy of flag-waving and well-wishing. But anger is back in a big way, redistributed but also revitalised. John McCain is angry about earmarks in the budget. (”If it seems like I’m angry, it’s because I am.”) Ben Bernanke is angry about bailing out AIG. (”If there is a single episode in this entire 18 months that has made
me more angry, I can’t think of one.”) And everybody is angry about the state of the economy.

The most popular targets of public anger are the greedheads and incompetents who plunged the country into economic meltdown. Hardly a day passes without a new culprit to throw stones at: CEOs who fly to Washington in private jets to beg for a handout, financial titans who were paid hundreds of millions to ruin their banks. And the anger has become politicised. This year’s meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on February 26th-28th attracted some 9,000 activists, the most ever. Taxpayer tea parties (a celebration of the Boston event back in 1773) have sprung up across the country, drawing anything from a few hundred protesters in New York to 2,000 in Greenville, South Carolina. RedState, a conservative blog, is calling on conservatives to “save the country by helping Obama to fail”.

The biggest cause of anger is Mr Obama’s willingness to bail out everyone with a tin cup, from bankrupt bankers to incompetent carmakers to over-their-ears mortgage-holders. People who have borrowed prudently and lived within their means are livid that they are being asked to bail out neighbours who splurged on McMansions and giant televisions. Rick Santelli, a previously obscure TV journalist, became a folk hero when he complained that Americans were being made to “subsidise the losers’ mortgages”.

There is also mounting fury, among centrists as well as conservatives, about Mr Obama’s budget, with its mixture of tax hikes for the wealthy and ambitious plans for regulating greenhouse gases and extending the government’s role in health care. Larry Kudlow, a television journalist who is contemplating challenging Chris Dodd for his Connecticut Senate seat, says that Mr Obama is “declaring war on investors, entrepreneurs, small businesses, large corporations and private equity and venture-capital funds”. Many former supporters worry that Mr Obama is treating the economic crisis rather as George Bush treated September 11th-as a convenient excuse for pursuing a long-held ideological agenda.

Anger seethes about the fact that so many big-government Democrats mysteriously lose their appetite for taxes when it comes to paying them themselves. This week saw the revelation that yet another of Mr Obama’s nominees, Ron Kirk, the would-be trade representative, underpaid his taxes in 2005-07. But above all, people are angry that Mr Obama led them down the garden path. Bipartisanship? He is proposing one of the most liberal budgets in decades. Abolishing earmarks ? The budget contains 8,570 of them. Honesty? The finance, property and insurance industries (all getting huge bail-outs) were the largest source of campaign contributions to Mr Obama after lawyers. Transcending racism? Eric Holder, the attorney-general, has accused Americans of being cowards when it comes to discussing race.

Backlash time 愤怒时代

All this poses dangers for Mr Obama. The tea-party protesters who hold up signs that read “Obama…commander and thief” are clearly preaching to the converted. But those who hold up signs saying “Screw up, move up” or “Honk if you’re paying my mortgage” may strike a chord with the wider public. Almost 60% of Americans tell pollsters that they are opposed to giving money to carmakers and banks that are in danger of collapsing. One of the lessons from both the Carter years and the first Clinton term is that new Democratic administrations are vulnerable to a populist backlash from the establishment-bashing,hypocrisy-smashing,small-business-defending right.

But this growing anger poses dangers for the right as well. The Republican Party runs the risk of being captured by its most extreme figures. Rush Limbaugh, a talk-show man who billed his talk to CPAC as an “address to the nation”, is now widely regarded as the chief spokesman for the Republican Party, much to the Democrats’ delight. The party also risks being branded as a “party of no” at a time when most Americans favour government activism. And Mr Obama still has an approval rating of over 60%: no longer exceptional, but still pretty good.

Mr Obama’s most important weapon during the election campaign was his ability to turn anti-Bush anger into pro-American hope. That now seems a world away. The politics of the next few years will be shaped by managing anger rather than transcending it. Mr Obama needs to direct the rising tide of anger at rich Republicans. The Republicans need to direct it at Mr Obama’s new establishment. Either way, hope loses.

A killer snake that was longer than a bus, as heavy as a small car and which could swallow an animal the size of a cow, has been discovered by scientists.

The 45ft long monster - named Titanoboa - was so big that it lived on a diet of crocodiles and giant turtles, squeezing them to death and devouring them whole.

Weighing an impressive 1.25 tons, it slithered around the tropical forests of South America 60million years ago, just five million years after the last dinosaurs were wiped out.

Partial skeletons of the boa constrictor-like prehistoric killer were found in a Colombian coal mine by an international team of fossil hunters. 

They estimate that it was larger than the fictional snake featured in the Jennifer Lopez horror movie Anaconda.

Dr Jonathan Bloch of the University of Florida, one of the researchers who announced the find, said: 'Truly enormous snakes really spark people's imagination, but reality has exceeded the fantasies of Hollywood.

'The snake that tried to eat Jennifer Lopez in the movie Anaconda was not as big as the one we found.'

The fossilised remains were found in an open cast mine in Cerrejon, Colombia with turtles and crocodiles.

The creature lived during the Palaeocene epoch - the 10million-year period that followed the destruction of the dinosaurs by a giant asteroid or comet, and helps fill a missing gap in evolution, the scientists report today in the journal Nature.

Before the discovery, there had been no fossil vertebrates - or animals with back bones - between 65million and 55million years ago in tropical South America.

Dr Jason Head, of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, in Washington DC, said: 'Now we have a window into the time just after the dinosaurs went extinct and can actually see what the animals replacing them looked like.'

He added: 'This colossal, boa constrictor-like creature stretched longer than a city bus and weighed more than a car. It's the biggest snake the world has ever known.

'The snake's body was so wide that if it were moving down the hall and decided to come into my office to eat me, it would literally have to squeeze through the door.'

The size of the snake showed  that conditions were around 10C hotter than today - around 30 to 34C on average.

Snakes and other cold-blooded animals are limited in body size by the temperature where they live.The largest reptiles and bugs live in the world's hottest places close to the equator.

Hunting for fossils is tricky in the forest-covered tropics because so little rock is exposed. However, the open cast mining exposed huge swaths of rock, including the remains of the prehistoric snake.

Dr Bloch said: 'It was a rain-forest like today, but it was even hotter and the cold-blooded reptiles were all substantially larger. The result was, among other things, the largest snakes the world has ever seen - and hopefully ever will.'

Off the scale: World's biggest snake bones

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the longest snake ever measured was 33ft in length. The heaviest - a python - weighed 403lb.

British scientist Dr David Polly who was involved in identifying the snake at Queen Mary, University of London, said: 'At its greatest width, the snake would have come up to about your hips. The size is pretty amazing.'

Last year, scientists revealed the smallest snake in the world - a four-inch long creature living in Barbados that is as thin as a strand of spaghetti and so tiny it could fit on a 10p coin.

雅尼（Yiannis Chrysomallis，藝名：Yanni，希臘語：Γιάννης Χρυσομάλλης，1954年11月14日－），生於希臘的卡拉馬塔，全球聞名的作曲家和演奏家，兩度被格萊美獎提名。

雅尼通常被稱作新世紀音樂家，但在他的自傳里，他更傾向於稱自己的音樂為現代器樂（Contemporary Instrumental）。

雅尼出生在一個很普通的希臘家庭，八歲的時候他開始彈鋼琴，童年的雅尼總是試圖為電影配曲，他並不在意電影的故事情節，而是用腦子記下電影的配曲，回家後再用鋼琴把它們彈出來，並逐步豐富旋律，他會給這些曲子取名為新音樂，因為他總是不斷的給每個曲子加進更好的效果做出更好的改善！他14歲那年，他打破了希臘國家男子50米自由泳記錄。1972年，在其父母的鼓勵下，雅尼離開了希臘，奔赴美國開始了他新的生活。雅尼最初的理想是成為一名臨床心理學家，在他18歲那年，他被明尼蘇達州的一所大學接收，正式移居美國並主修心理學，大學的幾年裡，他開始運用電子合成器和鋼琴來做出新的音樂效果。畢業後雅尼最終還是選擇了他鍾愛的音樂事業。他加入了一支名為「Chameleon」的搖滾樂隊，並在一些夜總會進行演出。

数学是优美的. 听上去有点奇怪? 当我第一次开始设计的时候，我确信如此。数学如此刻板乏味。你可能会惊讶的发现，最美观的设计，艺术作品，物体，甚至人都有数学上的共同点。尤其是黄金分割，也被称为神之比例，希腊字母表示其为 Φ (phi). 本教程会剖析一个网站的布局，以及如何对其黄金分割。

网页骨架

这些是web页面的主要元素。有很多不同的方法去组织它们，但是这种布局也许是最常用的。

Container

所有的web页面都用一个container，主要是为了同一个目的：去包含一些页面元素，然而这个方法实现各有不同。例如，body标签或者是最 常用的div。甚至于过去常用的table（不要使用table作为你的container，这是一个破方法）。想想container作为你房子的外 墙，里面包含卧室，厨房，起居室等等。

container的类型:

1. Liquid: 根据浏览器宽度填充。
2. Fixed: 指定的宽度，并不会根据浏览器宽度改变。

Header

header并不真的是一个特定的元素，尽管某些人会认为它是。它更多是用在涉及到你放置你的logo，导航栏，tagline的web页面顶层的 地方。许多人更愿意把这些元素包含在一个div里以方便使页面样式和内容分离。header会被视为一个container，所以它有两种类型选择，就是 上文提到的 liquid 或 fixed 。

Logo

你的logo是你的身份和品牌。最常用的是把logo放在你header的左上角。我们的阅读习惯是，从左往右，从上至下，所以你的log应该放在访问者第一眼能看到的地方。

Navigation

页面导航是最重要的元素之一;你的访问者需要用它来使用你的站点。 它应该是容易被找到且易用的，这就是为什么大多数的人把它放在header部分，最少也是在页面顶端附近的原因。

 navigation类型:

1. Horizontal: 水平显示，被称为‘navigation’。
2. Vertical: 垂直显示，被称为‘menu’

Main Content

每个人都（应该）知道，内容才是王道！当人们来参观你的站点，这是他们想看的主要元素。它应该是web页面的焦点，所以参观者才能快速找到他们想要的。

Sidebar

sidebar是放置你次要内容的元素，像一些广告，站点搜索，订阅链接(RSS, Twitter, Email, 等), 联系方法等。这个元素不是必需的，尽管右很多站点用它。它大多数是放在右边的，但是你也能把它放在左边或者两边，只要不扰乱主要内容的浏览就行。网站使用 横向或纵向导航，sidebar往往是用纵向导航。

Footer

web页面的尾部总会有一个页脚，让您的访客知道他已经到达了你web页面的结束部分。和heaser一样，footer也不是一个特殊的元素 。在你的页脚里包含版权，法律声明以及主要的联系方式。包含一些重要的链接是个好主意，比如home page, contact page, 等. 有些网站用这个区域提供一些相关材料或者其他重要信息。

"Whitespace"

你可能有强烈的愿望去填充这些页面上的空白，但是请不要这么做。“空白”也是相当重要的。你可以看看NetTuts网站是如何有效的使用空白区域的，创建了页面平衡给人一个好的感觉。

以上是web页面的骨架，现在我们来看如何黄金分割这些元素。

黄金分割和使用网格（Grids）

还记得之前我说数学是美丽的吗？我们认为视觉的吸引力是基于比例的（比如，黄金分割）。几千年来，艺术家，设计师，建筑师等都有意无意的在使用了一个共同的比例来增加他们作品的美感。这个神奇的数字是什么呢？ 1.62 (实际是 1.618...) 我不会说这个数字的起源，但是我会告诉你如何使用它。

使用黄金分割是 非常简单的。比如你像找到你主要内容和sidebar列表的宽度。你将使用你内容区域总的宽度除以 1.62. 然后得到555.55px. 我们不需要那么精确，所以我们就用555px。现在你就知道你的主要内容元素是555px的宽度，你的sidebar是345px。看看多么容易？！

但是等等先，乐趣不止于此！你也可以应用黄金分割到其他元素的宽度和高度。

Using Grids

如果你和大多数的人一样，不想每次都抱着个计算器来计算这个黄金比率。那么最简单的方法就是用grid。所以你需要做的就是把你的宽度或是高度分成三分。

要产生更详细的gird，只需要继续三等分就行。如果你读了前一篇文章“与Blueprint CSS框架的亲密接触” 的话，你会看到Blueprint CSS框架用了一个详细的gird系统。 不仅仅是gird设计更容易更快，而且它也创建了一个美观的布局。如果你还没有使用gird设计，那么这是一个很好的尝试机会。你可以为 fireworks，photoshops或者其他软件从 http://960.gs下载grid模板。

正如你看到的，NetTuts很好的遵循了黄金比率。顶端三分之一的网页再次分成了三分，非常接近黄金比率。难怪NetTuts的设计是如此吸引人！

如果你要做一个新的设计，我严重推荐你找一些流行的站点，评价他们的布局，以及如何应用黄金比率和gird。然后花一些时间去实践使用黄金分割，并在你的布局上面使用gird。

俄亥俄州哥伦布市——当俄亥俄州立大学的冰川学家没能在他们从喜马拉雅冰原上钻取的最新冰芯中找到他们预期的放射性信号的时候，他们知道这意味着他们的研究有麻烦了。

但是这些失踪的放射性标记——它们是半个世纪前原子弹试验的残余物——预示着生活在这个辽阔的山脉的下游的五亿多人们面临着一个更大的威胁。

在一篇刚发表在《地球物理研究快报》上的论文中，来自Byrd极地研究中心的科学家解释说，来自青藏高原南部边缘海拔19849英尺（6050米）处的纳木那尼冰川的全部三份冰芯都缺少氚（这是一种贝塔射线放射源，类似于锶和铯）和一种氯的同位素的浓度。

"我们在过去数年中从这些高山地区钻取了13个冰芯，结果发现只有一次的冰芯缺少这些信号——也就是这次的冰芯，"俄亥俄州立大学的地球科学杰出教授Lonnie Thompson解释说。

这些冰芯的上部缺少放射性信号导致确定冰芯中冰的年龄面临一个关键的问题。1962-63年苏联的北极核试验以及1952-58年南太平洋核试验的残余物的信号为校正冰芯的时间尺度提供了精确的时间基准。

"我们依靠这些时间标记从而测定冰芯上部的年龄，如果缺少了它们，提取冰芯保存的气候历史就变得更具挑战性，" Thompson说。

"我们于2006年在纳木那尼钻取了3个冰芯，一直钻到基岩，"该论文的第一作者、俄亥俄州立大学的博士生Natalie Kehrwald说。"当我们分析每一个冰芯的上面50英尺（15米）的时候，我们发现贝塔射线的放射性信号只不过稍微比正常的本底水平高一点。"

她说，氢的同位素氚以及氯36都在纳木那尼冰芯中消失了。然而，他们发现了少量的铅同位素铅210，这让他们能够测定冰芯上部的年龄。

"我们能测出时间大概在公元1944年，" Kehrwald说。"再考虑到其它失踪的信号，这意味着自从1944年以来这个冰川的表面就没有积累新的冰。"1944年是在那些核试验之前将近20年。

尽管校准冰芯用的放射性层的丢失为Thompson的研究带来了一个挑战，他更担心一种可能性，即该地区的其他高海拔冰川就像纳木那尼冰川那样不再积累冰，这可能对生活在这些地区的人们的水源产生影响。

"想想数以百万计的人们生活在在这些地区，他们依靠贮存在冰里的水生活，如果他们在未来失去了这些水，那将是一个严重的问题，"他说。

来自纳木那尼这样的冰川的季节性径流为亚洲次大陆部分的印度河、恒河以及雅鲁藏布江提供了水。这组科学家说，如今在一些地区每年的某些月份中，这些河流的水被严重地消耗掉了。这些冰川不再积累新的冰将只能让这个问题恶化。

"目前预测该地区河流量的模型已经考虑了近来冰川的‘退缩’，" Kehrwald说。"但是它们没有考虑到其中一些冰川事实上一直在减少。"

"如果没有把这种减少考虑进去，那么无论人们采取什么策略用于适应河流量的减少，它们都不可行。"

Thompson担心纳木那尼冰川正在发生的情况可能也在全世界许多其他高海拔冰川上发生。"我认为这对于未来安第斯山脉、喜马拉雅山脉的水供应以及生活在这些区域的人们都有重大的意义。"

在2006年钻取的纳木那尼冰芯中缺少那些放射性信号还表明Thompson和他的同事此前对其他冰原的考察很幸运。

"我们不能不想到，倘若我们回到以前的钻取地点——80年代的时候在这些地方钻取了一些冰芯——然后取回一些新的冰芯，那么如今这些放射性信号还在吗？"他问道。

"我猜它们就消失了。"这组科学家近来的研究表明非洲、南美洲和亚洲的冰川在过去的数年中出现了类似的减少。
